Dental physiotherapy usually focuses on temporomandibular joint disorders, which occur in 3-12% of the population causing various types of pain or functional disorders in the masticatory musculoskeletal system.

The therapy consists of manual techniques aimed at reducing pain. The therapy also aims to improve range of motion and quality of movement. The physiotherapist works with manual therapy techniques (manual) such as:

  • Joint techniques: joint glides, joint traction,
  • Muscle techniques: trigger points, transverse and functional massage of muscles, e.g. masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, subglandular, supraglandular.

Complementary therapy can be: high-energy laser therapy treatments, exercises as prescribed by a physiotherapist.

 

Indications

  • Pain, stiffness in the area of the temporomandibular joints, muscles of the masticatory organ, face,
  • Asymmetrical movement of the mandible when opening the mouth (e.g., deviation of the mandible to one side during movement),
  • Reduced range of motion in the temporomandibular joints - a feeling of blockage, trismus,
  • Crackling, clicking, skipping sensation when the jaw moves,
  • Tension headaches, sinus headaches, migraine headaches, neuropathic headaches,
  • Supporting speech therapy treatment,
  • Cervical spine pain,
  • bruxism,
  • discomfort associated with eye movement,
  • tinnitus,
  • Patients after surgical tooth extraction,
  • Supporting the treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunctions outside the head and cervical spine area.

Contraindications

  • viral, bacterial diseases,
  • painful sensitive language,
  • White-red mucous membrane inside the mouth,
  • Sore throat lasting more than 3 weeks,
  • Hoarseness lasting longer than 3 weeks,
  • Painful, difficult swallowing,
  • nosebleeds,
  • non-healing damage to the masticatory organ.
