Preparation

  • The nevus under examination must not be covered with makeup - cosmetics must be washed off the lesion before the examination.

Description of the study

The examination involves viewing selected skin lesions with a dermatoscope. This is an optical device, with illumination by means of which the doctor views the changed areas in a very close-up (10 times magnification).
A dermatoscope is an instrument containing two contact cylinders used to view skin lesions. Before viewing, the surface of the skin where the cylinder is applied is dotted with a thin layer of imersion oil (which provides an optical environment between the skin being viewed and the dermatoscope).
The examination takes several to several minutes. It can also be performed in pregnant women. It is painless and can be repeated many times.

Indications

  • Differentiating pigmented spots (nevi or melanoma),
  • Differentiation with vascular spots (vascular lesions, seborrheic warts, pigmented lesions),
  • Differentiation with plaque parapsoriasis (psoriasis, early forms of mycosis fungoides granuloma).
